I’ve shared a LOT of Phyn Plus testing lately on the YouTube channel. My device has been under test 24/7/365 (well almost 365–it’s coming up soon!) this year.

  • Heat testing.
  • UV exposure.
  • How long does it take to shut off the water in medium to large leak scenarios?
  • What’s the smallest leak?

Installed outside with southern exposure in the Sonoran Desert, where the summer solstice had it in the sun just after sunrise at 5:16 am until the neighbor’s house mercifully provided some shade before sunset at 7:41…

Phyn. Plus. Has. Survived. <update: now Iinked below>

That’s giving you a preview into an upcoming video on how it survived this summer, which will be coming out November 5th. We have to make it through any possible remaining 100+ °F days left in October to call making it through the summer a success (knowing full well the reflective heat off the aluminum housing 100+ °F will continue year round).

In the meantime, I realized the collection of videos on Phyn Plus is growing quite large and wanted to provide one resource to with a small summary on why each video may be of interest if you are looking for specific details before you decide to buy one.

So here’s the list:

The costs you may not initially expect when you first think about installing a water monitor…and it’s terrible when you only discover them after. Hence why I put #1 first and spent 6 minutes trying to make sure anyone deciding between these systems fully understand the consequences of how a water monitor handles backflow–it’s truly hidden and unexpected.

It survived:

Phyn Smart Water Sensors work with Phyn Plus. When auto shutoff is enabled the sensor tells Phyn Plus to close the valve when water is detected.

The things you can discover with one of these devices on your home…like the odds of hot water ever reaching your dishwasher.

Thermal expansion is an important concept to understand because these water monitors and their algorithms have to take this phenomenon into account if you have a storage water heater. This is also why you will always see a drop in Phyn’s plumbing tests–water is always in flux, not static. It can be VERY difficult to discern between thermal contraction and a small leak, when, of course, they exist together. That’s hard enough by itself, but compound that on top of customer expectations where false positives are not appreciated and it’s a very hard problem, if not impossible to keep everyone happy. But after having gone so far into leak testing across Phyn Plus and Flo by Moen, I’d 100% believe either system if it tells me there is a leak.
