Laminate Flooring Calculator – Box Count & Cost

**Our honesty policy: This post may contain affiliate links and I may be compensated if you make a purchase at no extra cost to you. Some are, some aren't--I do some comparison shopping. The important thing is you will know exactly what we are talking about. Drop a note/comment if you have any questions on the products as these are materials and tools we use on our own projects.

Laminate Flooring Calculator - Box Count and Total Laminate Material Cost. This calculator does not round up to a whole box. Knowing if your number is close to the beginning of the box or if you have to use most of the box may help you in determining how much is left as you get close to installing the laminate at the end of a room. How much is left when you get to this point?

How much is left at this point?

This laminate flooring calculator is a quick way of determining how many boxes you will need for your flooring project as well as get an idea for how much the materials will end up costing you.

Details on the Laminate Flooring Calculator

Why did I leave decimals in there and ask you to round up?

  1. Some retail stores limit you to buying entire boxes.
  2. As a pretty detailed person who likes to optimize, I like to see if I can get away closer to the minimum, as I explained with baseboard in this post: How to Measure Baseboard (and Order Less!).
  3. I’m going to use this calculator!
  4. I don’t want to hide the real number from you either.

Knowledge is power.

Knowing if your number is close to the beginning of the box or if you have to use most of the box may help you in determining how much is left as you get close to installing the laminate at the end of a room.

Likewise, in the default data above, that 6.04 boxes for 10% extra probably should only be 6 boxes. However, being that this is a strict math calculation, the cost result is going to give you a total based on 7 boxes. I’d rather give you a worst case scenario that picture an ideal situation and be wrong. Hope for the best and plan for the worst, right?

This calculator does not take into account any tools, glue, subfloor prep or anything else possibly needed for the complete job.

If you decide to hire it out, consider contractors may get a discount at their preferred suppliers. However, this laminate flooring calculator gives you a basic idea of how much of a bid from a contractor is a material cost for laminate alone.

Other thoughts when buying your laminate flooring:

Know the store’s return policy.

  • Some stores may let you return single pieces. YMMV.
  • Some stores may let you return entire boxes.
  • If you opt to buy close to the minimum, how much do they carry in stock? How long will it take to fulfill an order if additional boxes are needed?
  • Is this a special order item and will they take back any unopened boxes? If they do, is there a restocking fee?

It is best to ask these questions up front before you make your purchase.
