The end of last night, 1.5 hours this morning and an hour of a little person’s nap just now were all an exercise in frustration. I could not figure out how to do the simple task of updating what I thought was my tagline in the WordPress Hueman theme. I saved the new tagline successfully: the Appearance -> Customize -> Web Page Design -> Site Identity: Logo, Title, Tagline and Site Icon -> Tagline matched the Settings -> General -> Tagline. However, the changes did not appear in the blog.
Maybe it was a length problem. I am known for my style of writing long descriptive code function names at work. I shortened my tagline and hit save. No dice.
Perhaps there is a caching problem. I updated the current header photo and hit save. When I hit refresh on a different tab it updated immediately. Dang. At least I proved the problem is solvable in real time. I just had to figured it out…
The answer to solve your “tagline” problem:
I started looking at the html source code, searching for the offending old tagline. I also noticed the new tagline was in there too, just in different html tags. Part of my problem was the tagline and <hu-blog-subheading> originally matched leading me to look at the tagline. Instead, the real problem was <hu-blog-subheading>. So the new quest was finding and changing <hu-blog-subheading>.
I am kinda surprised at the lack of discussion on the internet. I don’t think I am the only one who ended up using the same phrase in both the tagline and in the Blog Sub-Heading. My suspicion is perhaps I did not enter in the Blog Sub-Heading myself: the Hueman Theme was attempting to be helpful in filling out the field for me? I had originally set up the webpage to default to the blog and had recently changed it to a static page. Perhaps it was one of the repercussions of that decision?
It is hard to say because I have had this blog for a whole two weeks and seem to be working on a degree in web savviness. In my simplified life prior to two weeks ago I did not think about SEO, RSS, Pinterest, email lists, and the bane of my writing: passive sentences. I digress…
How to fix your “tagline” problem:
- In your wordpress dashboard go to Appearance -> Customize -> Main Body Design -> Post Lists Design and Content : Blog, Archives, Search Results
- Notice the lovely Blog Sub-Heading.
- Profit!
